?Gdansk 1980 ? Leipzig 1989?: Solidarnosc meets ?Leipziger Freiheit?
Leipzig,
July 29, 2005
(Marketing Leipzig GmbH).
On the occasion of the „German-Polish year 2005/2006“, Leipzig will be
promoting its social and commercial activities in its neighbouring
country. As a prelude to this, starting today, a 75 square metre poster
with the Polish headline „Together we’re changing Europe“ at the head
office of the Gdansk city council will attract attention to the
struggle for „liberty“ and the related political changes in both cities.
The statement will be underscored with the title „Gdansk 1980 – Lipsk
1989“ and by pictures of the demonstrating crowds. An image of the
„Khersones“, which has been travelling across the world with a sail
from the „Leipziger Freiheit“ marketing campaign, is pictured on the
banner. This profound creation will appeal to the citizens of Gdansk –
as well as to a current 90 businessmen and women, who will be making a
stop in Gdansk for the conclusion of the „SACHSEN Sail“ from July
28–31. The enormous poster is a project of Marketing Leipzig GmbH with
support from the Polish subsidiary of Stadtwerke Leipzig GPEC and
Ellerhold AG.
„We’re making a clear connection between the years 1980 in Gdansk and
1989 in Leipzig with politically and emotionally charged pictures and
the slogan ‘Together we’re changing Europe’. Both cities fought for
liberty – in Gdansk Solidarnosc was born in the Lenin shipyard, in
Leipzig the Monday demonstrations heralded the fall of the wall. The
‘Khersones’ was built in the Lenin shipyard in 1989 and is a symbol for
freedom, not least of all because of the ‘Leipziger Freiheit’ sail“,
says Managing Director of Marketing Leipzig GmbH, Lutz Thielemann.
Yesterday the windjammer „Khersones“ reached its destination in Gdansk
on its way from Travemünde during the „SACHSEN Sail“. A total of 90
business men and women from eastern Germany will be using the cruise
from July 24 to 28 to build and maintain business contacts. At the
closing meeting in Gdansk, the „Commerce Captains“ will join in
business and panel discussions such as the „Talk to Success“, organised
by the Leipzig Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) (29 to 31 July
2005).
Marketing Leipzig GmbH has planned other attention-getting activities
for the „German-Polish year 2005/2006“. For example, Leipziger
Stadtmarketing is organising a business trip to Krakow for October 2
and 3, 2005. Decision makers from the Leipzig region will then use the
visit by Leipzig Mayor Wolfgang Tiefensee to strengthen the economic
and social networks with Krakow. As scheduled, an editorial supplement
appeared in the Polish daily newspaper „Gazeta Wyborcza“ on 1 October
under the organisational direction of „Leipziger Freiheit“. As in the
previous year, Leipzig will introduce itself to a national readership
over eight pages. The „Gazeta Wyborcza“ is the most important
opinion-forming medium in Poland.
