Please do not react like a typical city dweller if you really want such an apartment: Don't terrorise the landlord with phone calls. Don't get married in a hurry. And don't invent a career as civil servant. Keep cool. Because in Leipzig there are almost 100,000 freshly renovated Founding Era apartments. And until now everyone has found his dream apartment. Other than that you can behave like a normal city dweller: Go for walks in the decorative parks, visit the popular scene cafes and wander through our impressive shopping arcades. That is Leipzig Freedom.
Live as you want to. And not according to the defined rent list.
The houses and apartments do not look as if the rents would be low. Europe's Founding Era quarter always has something free to offer tenants with high standards. And the city's future, for example, is being built in: Once an enormous industrial estate, this district is being converted into an impressive living estate. In the old factories lofts and studios are being built, mostly directly on the canals and reconstructed rivers, where once products were shipped to the whole wide world.
Freedom lives in Leipzig. Perhaps it loves the flair as much as we do.
The flair of Leipzig city centre is characterised above all by the urban architecture. Apart from the numerous well-maintained building structures from the Founder and Art Nouveau Era it is the unique system of passageways and courtyards which cause visitors and investors to constantly go into raptures. Of course cities such as London, Paris or Hamburg also have large numbers of business arcades, but only Leipzig possesses such a closed system of these constructions within the city centre.
Strollers love passageways
Whether Steibs Hof, Zentralmessepalast, Stenzlers Hof or Jägerhof – the buildings impress also today with their architectural beauty, their splendour and monumentality. Within the city centre alone between 1893 and 1938, 30 exhibition halls were built which were very functionally equipped. At the time of Leipzig's trade fair boom in 1927, 50 exhibition halls were in operation.
After German reunification in 1990 many enterprises and investors above all made use of the chance to renovate the historical passageways, courtyards and exhibition halls. It can be seen in all detail work and facades that protection of historical buildings had top priority. Now the passageways are dedicated to elegant shopping and upmarket gastronomy. Even in the rain you can stroll around for hours unperturbed.
And don't spoil the flair
To this end we have made the whole city centre car-free. And because it is compact and densely built-up you can reach every place of interest in a few minutes. If you want to make a date: most people are attracted magically to the kilometre long pub mile, which stretches from the market to the Theatre. This is where you meet all those who went their own way during the day. As soon as the sun comes out something special occurs throughout the whole city: the so-called „Freisitz". There are 4,000 of these in the city centre alone. What it means is seats on the terraces and pavements of the cafes and restaurants – when eating, drinking, discussing, Leipzig people love to spend their free time in the open air. And what better name could they choose to express this than Freisitz (free seat)?
